Introduce yourself.
Hi! Hi! My name is Christina. I was born in Boston, MA. I live there today. I am 22 years old, and have been interested in nutrition and fitness for the past few years.
What was your diet like before you became a Carnivore?
I began Keto in June 2017, and I followed it very closely until July 2018, when I decided to try Carnivore. It was a normal SAD diet. Because of my chronic rashes, swelling and inflammation in my joints and other autoimmune symptoms, I began eating low carb. Doctors didn't take me seriously. I was prescribed antihistamines, but I became frustrated by the treatment I received from doctors.
My mother had made the Keto-to-Carnivore transition several months before, and I thought she was crazy. Despite being both avid LC diet researchers, and both enjoy keeping up with the science behind it, we didn't really discuss her decision to become a Carnivore. I judged. Not gonna lie.
Why did you decide to try Carnivore?
I noticed that I was experiencing chronic bloating even on Keto. One day in July, I made a conscious choice to eat a zero-carb meal. I was amazed at how much I felt energized and alert after that. I felt so energized that I wanted to do some exercise. People often unbutton their pants after eating a large meal. They then complain about the "food baby" and self-loathe. This is what leads to a "food coma". That day, I realized that bloating was not as common as we might be led to believe.
What is your personal approach to the Carnivore Diet?
Carnivore was my month of July. I consumed 30 days of dairy and eggs, 2 ounces or less of cheese per day, and limited dairy to my coffee. I tried adding plant products to my diet for the month of August, but it didn't feel right. Carnivore, which includes eggs and limited dairy, was my new venture in September. Although I've had some avocados and nuts, I don't eat any food that isn't from an animal more than 90% of the time. I have my fall schedule in full effect. I am also very busy so I have implemented some fasting during the week.
How have the Carnivore Diet helped you?
Wow! The bloating disappeared, for one. Another is neuroregulation of appetite. I'm continuing to lose weight while eating intuitively, and not tracking what I eat. My body is very good at telling me when my stomach is full. I don't feel like i overeat. Although I don't always crave other foods, I have found that my taste buds are more savory than sweet. I can get a taste of it and it disappears. The best part? I find things like almonds, macadamia nuts, and avocado to be sweet. These foods make me feel satisfied and I can eat them. This is huge for me as someone who has struggled to binge eat my whole life. This was a benefit that I didn't even notice on Keto, although my health has dramatically improved. I still had occasional binge episodes. My last binge episode was actually in August, during weeks when I was transitioning back into Keto after my Carnivore experiment was over.
What are the negatives of the Carnivore Diet?
I have nothing negative to say about it. It was just the backlash of people who don’t understand it, such as comments calling this way to eat "irresponsible" etc. It's the best thing for me, and I'm 100% certain it is. Most of the time, my judgment doesn't bother me. However, I find myself spending more time defending my lifestyle than I would like.
Are you a Carnivore Diet runner? If so, how did you find it and what are your tips for achieving it?
Yes, I do. I work out 5-6 days per week, and my workouts have definitely improved since I joined Carnivore. I'm currently in week 4 of the Strong Lifts5x5 program and am using it to increase strength and basic movements. I belong to a local boxing gym and take 4 classes per week. I also do yoga for flexibility and recovery. Although I exercise for mental clarity and stress relief, I don't think I could do the same amount without Carnivore (or, at least, low carb). This was not my normal life. I was not an athlete growing up and I didn't like the idea of being a fitness instructor until I discovered low carb.
What advice would you offer someone who is curious about this diet but hasn't yet made the jump?
If you're coming from a high carbohydrate diet, I recommend Keto. It is possible to imagine that the transition from high carbohydrate to low carb would be difficult enough to make it impossible to stop. It might be worth taking a while to become fat-adapted and then to adjust to low carb living before making the transition to Carnivore. I recommend that you give it 30 days if you are already doing this. This is the time people should give it a fair shot to start seeing positive results that will motivate them to continue.
Are you sure that Carnivores will ever be accepted as a mainstream food?
Although I wish it could, I believe that a lot has been done to demonize saturated fats, animal products and red meat. The plant-based movement has a lot of political power. It's not possible to convince the entire society to stop believing what they've been told for decades about their health. If everyone did their research, it would be a perfect world. Many of us who have promoted this diet via social media have realized that most people don't do their research. It is getting a lot of negative media attention, and I wonder if they will call it "just another fad diet". I don't mean for you to be pessimistic. Although I would love to see this type of eating accepted more widely, there isn’t much profit from it and I don’t see it being accepted in mainstream society. This is not a good idea for the cereal and sugar industries to collaborate on.

I have never heard anyone say vegetables are not necessary to a healthy diet, until I discovered Carnivore research. I also have never heard anyone suggest that they might be bad for you. It's the best way to learn about something is to actually do it.
